URTENS HISTORY
Restaurant Urten in Copenhagen is a plant-based gem located in Larsbjørnsstræde in the charming Latin quarter. Formerly known as a Thai restaurant, it has now embraced plant-based cuisine and offers a 100% vegan menu. With a warm, intimate atmosphere and seating for around 30 guests, Urten is known for its seasonal approach, using local and organic ingredients whenever possible.
We've always been driven by a passion for plant-based food and a love for classic French, Italian and Nordic cuisines. Located above the famous Atlas Bar the restaurant adds a unique green twist to the area's culinary scene​.
1982
On a small, charming street in Copenhagen, two young guys, Niels and Bent, opened the doors to a small juice bar with a big heart. The name was Urtekræmmerens Saftbar, and here they served fresh juices and vegetarian dishes for those looking for something a little different. At the time, it was rare to find vegetarian places in the city, but Niels and Bent had a vision - to create a place where people could enjoy simple, delicious dishes made with love for both food and nature.
1992
Time passed, and in 1992 they felt it was time for a change. Saftbaren became a real eatery where vegetarians and meat lovers alike could find something to delight them. The menu grew, drawing inspiration from all over the world, and it quickly became a meeting place for people of all kinds. Young, old, the originals and the ordinary found their way to the small eatery that was now buzzing with life and conversation from people sharing a good meal together.
2020
And then we came to 2020, when the two gentlemen - perhaps no longer so young, but certainly just as passionate - took the next big step. Atlas Bar and Urten both became entirely plant-based, and with it, a new era was born. Urten, which opened around 2014, had been dedicated to plant-based food from the start, and now Atlas Bar followed the green wave. Today, you can still find Niels and Bent in the restaurants, still cooking and serving food with the same passion they had when they started.
